Radio Kiskeya

Radio Kiskeya is an independent haitian media organization which has its roots deep in the Haitian people struggle for democracy over the decades. Founded in May 7th 1994, by journalists Sonny Bastien, Marvel Dandin and Liliane Pierre-Paul, Kiskeya as it is called affectively has rose to become a beacon in the fight for human rights and democracy in Haiti. This comes as no surprise as its founders had previously worked along famous journalist Jean Dominique in the 1980s. The founders of Kiskeya had then been rounded up by the dictatorship of Jean-Claude Duvalier (Baby Doc) on the now infamous Black Friday episode, on Friday, November 28th 1980. This dark chapter of Haiti’s history left scars that are still vivid to this day with dozens of human rights activists, lawyers and journalists either imprisoned or thrown in exile because of their opposition to the brutal Baby Doc regime. In recent history, Kiskeya has remained as defiant of wanna-be dictators and abusive governments. And its struggle persisted. Nevertheless, a fire, on Friday December 21st 2018, ravaged the station, and destroyed nearly 4 decades worth of documents along with the building. There were no injuries but the loss is inestimable. Kiskeya vows to come back and has structured a committee to raise funds to return on the airwaves as soon as possible.

Kiskeya travay pou li vinn yon referans nan koze dwa moun ak demokrasi an Ayiti. Sa pa yon sipriz lè nou konnen fondatè li yo te deja travay ansanm gran jounalis Jean Dominique nan ane 1980 yo, nan Radio Haïti Inter. Vandredi 28 novanm 1980, jounalis ki ta pral vinn fonde Kiskeya te pran gwo kou nan men diktati Jean-Claude Duvalier (Baby Doc) ki te fè yon razya, jou sa-a. Chapit sa-a ki trè nwa nan listwa Ayiti te make anpil moun pou lontan, pami lèkèl plizyè douzèn aktivis dwa moun, avoka ak jounalis ke swa yo te voye nan prizon swa yo voye an ekzil paske yo te nan opozisyon ak rejim bout di Baby Doc la. Nan dènye ane sa yo, Kiskeya goumen bab pou bab ak apranti diktatè osnon gouvèlman ki ap fè abi. Men yon dife, nan jou Vandredi 21 desanm 2018, ravaje estasyon-an, epi detwi prèske 4 deseni dokiman, achiv ansanm ak bilding lan. Granmesi pa te gen ni mon blese ni moun mouri men pèt yo inestimab. Kiskeya pwomèt pou li retounen. Konsa li òganize yon komite pou ranmase lajan pou retounen sou lèzonn pi rapidman posib.
